The birth of Ixtapa
On the country’s coastlines there was a nice coconut plantation and mangrove estuary where, in the early 70′s, the government planned a tourist resort. This resort was created with special founds offered by the Bank of Mexico and named Ixtapa.
There were two destinations of this kind, Cancún, in the state of Quintana Roo, and Ixtapa, close to Zihuatanejo. The World Bank also offered a loan, as support for the development of Ixtapa.
The choice of the site and it architecture were made by Agustín and Enrique Landa Verdugo. Some of the other architects selected to build the city are still living there.
We should also mention that the famous Mexican telenovela “Marimar” was filmed in Ixtapa, in ’94.
